Los Angeles Community College District

BuildLACCD

Project

Educating more than 3 million students during its 77-year history, the Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD) is the largest such district in the United States. AECOM heads BuildLACCD, the project management organization for the final phase of a 14-year, USD 6 billion program to modernize and renovate the district’s nine colleges, and design and build 67 new buildings. Financed through bond programs supplemented by state funding, the ambitious program is mandating the use of BIM technology and processes.

Solution

LACCD’s comprehensive BIM standards list approved software for every function performed on the design-build projects, and specify ProjectWise as the central repository for all project information. Using ProjectWise, participants from over 200 firms involved have controlled, secure access to the 3 million files required to complete their jobs effectively. The BIM standards also require i-models for each building to incorporate all data and disciplines, improving coordination among multiple entities.

Outcome

The use of ProjectWise saved LACCD an estimated USD 12 million in labor, through time saved in searching for files, and reduced rework due to improved collaboration and version control. The acclaimed BIM standards have facilitated the construction of LEED-certified buildings that have won numerous awards for energy efficiency and green technology. Widespread use of solar energy will contribute to a positive work and learning environment for the rapidly growing student body.

Software

The BIM technology deployed on this project includes AECOsim Building Designer, Descartes, MicroStation, Navigator, and ProjectWise. As part of the approved BIM solution, Bentley software is used by hundreds of project participants including architects, designers, engineers, construction managers, contractors, and consultants. Navigator streamlines BIM reviews and issue resolution, while Navigator Mobile allows participants to view project information and reliably resolve issues from the office, onsite, or the field.

This project was the winner in the Government category of the 2016 Be Inspired Awards, now known as the Going Digital Awards in Infrastructure. Watch the presentation:

Facts

  • i-models are passed on to the LACCD Facilities Department, which uses the intelligent project data for operations and maintenance.

  • Using innovative designs and the latest energy-efficient technologies, the district will accomplish its goal of achieving net zero energy usage.

  • The construction program will fulfill the objective of expanding LACCD’s capacity and efficiency, enabling the district to prepare more students for careers and/or transfer to four-year universities.

Quote:

“Bentley ProjectWise provided the tool to coordinate over 3 million documents totaling 5 terabytes of data, giving 500 participants the latest controlled information on which to base confident action. The repository provides the base of documents for ongoing asset management.”
