Success Story | CCCC First Highway Consultants Company Limited Application of BIM Design on the Expansion of JiHe Expressway

Application of BIM Design on the Expansion of JiHe Expressway

Shenzhen, Guangdong, China

Project

Located amid a dense road network in Shenzhen, Guangdong, China, the JiHe Expressway is undergoing a CNY 45 million reconstruction and extension. The expressway connects the surrounding area with the Bao’an International Airport, linking with over six other expressways in the area. CCCC First Highway Consultants Company was tasked with improving coordination and management while optimizing design. The project involved multiple engineering disciplines and presented site and design challenges. The team soon realized that, with a project of this size and scale, it would need to advance its work practices.

Solution

To overcome these challenges, CCCC began by implementing 3D modeling technology. The team began by using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to capture images, creating a reality model along the 43-kilometer line. The team also used this data to create BIM models of nearby roads, bridges, and landscaping. To help design large-scale and complex bridges, the team used parametric modeling and design, saving significant time by avoiding remodeling. Dynamic comparative modeling analysis helped the team compare the current environment with the design scheme, discovering issues in advance and reducing later modifications. The team also simulated driver scenarios during construction, determining a traffic safety scheme that sped up project approval and delivery while improving the design quality.

Outcome

By using UAVs and reality modeling technology, CCCC reduced survey time by 42 days, saving nearly CNY 8 million. By developing the BIM models, the team improved design quality and efficiency, shortening the design cycle by 68 days to save CNY 20 million. A connected data environment helped manage and streamline workflows to save 33 days on the project. CCCC now has a professional technical team that is skilled in BIM design, using this project as a model for future projects within the organization. Moving forward, CCCC plans to integrate the reality and BIM models with virtual reality for better visualization and understanding by all project participants..

Software

Bentley applications facilitated dynamic comparative analysis of the current environment and design scheme, industrializing project delivery. ContextCapture provided the reality modeling capabilities to create 3D models of the site while OpenRoads aided in the development of the BIM models. With ProjectWise, the team was able to create a connected data environment that helped organize and manage all project information. SYNCHRO allowed the team to simulate and analyze the traffic during construction for better management.
