At CNY 3.6 billion, the Heilongjiang Construction Industry Modernization Demonstration Park is a landmark green building campus in the Heilongjiang province. The project covers 1.26 million square meters and will help Heilongjiang Construction High-Tech Capital Group refine its project delivery and manufacturing processes. It is hoped that the park will contribute to greater adoption of more environmentally friendly construction methods in Heilongjiang province and help the group position itself as a key supplier, integrator, and service provider.
The facilities at the park will be used to manufacture prefabricated components including building steel structures, road and bridge steel structures, special concrete, and curtain walls. Built in three phases, the Heilongjiang Construction High-Tech Capital Group is responsible for coordinating and implementing the planning and design of the park and once built, managing production, operations, and maintenance. The challenges that the team faced included a tight design schedule, lack of a unified platform to facilitate collaboration among a multidiscipline team, and inefficient surveying methods that consumed many resource hours.
In planning the park layout, Heilongjiang Construction challenged the site design team to create a road system that maximizes efficiency and optimizes locations for handling and constructing prefabricated components. The team also implemented a collaborative working environment using a connected data environment to manage project content and CAD files. Without the robust collaboration system, it would have been difficult to integrate and share engineering information among the team.
To combine building information modeling and geospatial information system data, Heilongjiang Construction created a 3D reality mesh of the entire area using photogrammetry technology. The application’s measurement function extracts crucial data and combines it with the project’s road modeling software to generate road layouts and ancillary facilities. Lastly, the team deployed clash detection software to resolve issues, after considering size and weight of the manufactured components, and determine the best route from production to storage.

Using a versatile project management system, combined with integrated digital design applications, Heilongjiang Construction shortened design time by five days and reduced cost evaluation time by 80%. Reality modeling software helped generate an accurate 3D model, which improved earthworks measurements and calculations.
The software also helped the team improve reinforcement detailing by 20%, reduce raw materials loss by 5%, and lower resource expense by 60%. Clash detection and resolution in site layout optimization resulted in a 50% increase in vehicle accessibility and utilization. Lastly, working in a common platform saved CNY 4.5 million in construction costs and provided a complete lifecycle asset management solution.
The team used ContextCapture to establish a 3D reality model of the project area. OpenRoads ConceptStation significantly improved scheme planning efficiency. ProStructures helped model the steel structure production workshop.
The project team also used OpenBuildings Designer to assign parameter information – including type, size, and material – to the individual components. STAAD.Pro facilitated post processing and result reviews. MicroStation optimized the template line layout design and assembly scheme of the prefabricated components, optimizing the turnover of similar templates. ProjectWise provided the management platform for the entire asset lifecycle, allowing the team to work collaboratively and achieve simultaneous design and construction. Navigator helped the team detect and resolve clashes to improve site layout optimization.
