Success Story | PT Hutama Karya (Persero) Modification of Surabaya-Gresik Toll Road Interchange

Modification of Surbaya-Gresik Toll Road Interchange

Surabaya, East Java, Indonesia

Constructing a New Road Ahead of 2022 U20 World Cup

To help Indonesia prepare to successfully host the 2022 U20 World Cup, PT Hutama Karya was retained to construct the Surabaya-Gresik toll road interchange. The roadway would be 2.5 kilometers long with an 11-meter elevated interchange that would have a clearance of 4.5 meters high, providing access to the stadium, tourist district, and East Java’s capital city of Surabaya. It will also reduce travel time to and from the Juanda Internal Airport in Surabaya by 1.5 hours, bringing important benefits that will last long after the U20 World Cup event. However, the USD 11.5 million project presented complex geological conditions and coordination challenges, compounded by requirements to minimize interference with traffic flow and a one-year construction timeline during a global pandemic.

Improving Visualization on Complex Roadway Project

To complete this complex project within the tight timeline, PT Hutama Karya knew that traditional methods would not be successful. They tried implementing BIM software, but their initial technology lacked efficiency and visualization quality. With everyone working from home during the COVID-19 pandemic, it was important to find software that would allow them to collaborate and get the job done both quickly and efficiently. Therefore, they sought software that would provide comprehensive, integrated 3D modeling and visualization, ensuring that their team could stay connected.

Creating 3D Models for Improved Visualization

After considering their options, PT Hutama Karya selected ContextCapture to generate a contour map of the existing site conditions. They then used PLAXIS to analyze soil samples, determining the suitable work plan and material for construction, which would prevent future failures. With OpenRoads and OpenBridge, the team created 3D models of the project, accelerating drawing production and facilitating clash detection. LumenRT provided improved visualization of the project, as well as helped improve communication among stakeholders to streamline decision-making.

Saving Significant Time on a Project with a Tight Timeline

By using ContextCapture rather than manual methods of creating a reality model, PT Hutama Karya worked 400% faster. OpenRoads and OpenBridge accelerated drawing production by 30 days, while their clash detection capabilities helped avoid potential errors to save USD 3 million. Working in an open, connected data environment saved two months amid COVID-19. They plan to use the 3D models as the foundation for creating digital twins to promote their digital strategies in the construction sector.
